GIS Lab
In the GIS Lab of the Geoinformation working group, students have the opportunity to apply and deepen the skills and knowledge gained in the courses. In this computer pool, 25 modern workstations are available for students, equipped with powerful hardware and extensive software from the field of geographic information systems.
Opening hours
... during the semester
During the lecture period, the GIS lab can be entered without a transponder from 08:00 - 18:00. If you would like to work in the GIS lab and are not taking part in a course, please check the occupancy schedule on the door to make sure that the GIS lab is not occupied at the moment. Free work is not permitted during an ongoing course.
... in the evening and at the weekend
Because of the "round-the-clock use" of the GIS laboratory, we offer you the opportunity to work on modern and powerful computers at flexible times to enable you to study quickly and practically. Access to the GIS laboratory in the evenings and at weekends requires that you are in possession of a transponder, as the door to the GIS laboratory - like the other access doors - is equipped with an appropriate security system. You can enter the building at the above-mentioned times via the rear entrance on the courtyard side.
Such flexible opening hours are only possible if all users adhere to the given usage regulations on their own responsibility and ensure that the computer and room are treated with due care. This means, among other things, that nothing may be eaten or drunk in the GIS laboratory and the windows must be closed by the last users. If this no longer works satisfactorily, Geoinformation reserves the right to restrict the flexible usage times again at any time.
Access
Who is allowed to use the GIS Lab?
In principle, every student of the study program "Geodesy and Geoinformation" as well as all members of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation can use the facilities of the GIS-Laboratory, provided that the use concerns a project in the field of teaching or research.
Students from other disciplines will be granted access if they are attending an IGG course that requires computer access. For special faculty events, participating students are granted a temporary right of use.
To work in the GIS Lab you need your Uni-ID, which you usually received with your enrollment. If you have any problems or questions regarding the Uni-ID, please contact the HRZ.
Terms of use
By switching on the PC, you automatically agree to the terms of use for working in the GIS-Laboratory. In the event of a violation of the user regulations, your permission to use the GIS-Laboratory may be withdrawn, and in the event of damage caused by negligence, the user will be held fully liable.
Prohibited are mainly:
- Consumption of food and beverages
- Smoking
- Bringing animals
- Posting or smearing the whiteboards
- Moving the tables
Equipment
General
There are 25 workstations in the GIS lab, which - if 2 people share a computer - allow lectures with up to 50 people. The lecturer has a presentation computer with an attached beamer at his disposal, but the connection of his own presentation notebook is not provided. Upon request, the use is also possible for other courses of the faculty.
The students of the study program "Geodesy and Geoinformation" have the possibility to use the computer with the software used in the courses for independent work also outside the opening hours. This requires the loan of a transponder.
Hardware
All GIS Lab computers run the Linux operating system (Ubuntu 14) in a private network segment connected to the Bonnet via a Gigabit switch (Cisco).
- Processor: Intel Core i7
- Main memory: 16 GB RAM
- Hard Drive: SSD mit 256 GB
- Monitor: 22" TFT
Software
The software installed on the computers is regularly updated at the start of each new semester and covers a range from GIS and graphics software to office applications.
Printing
Printing is unfortunately not possible in the GIS Lab.
Instructions for use
How to register?
After starting the computer, a login window appears in which one enters the personal UNI-ID and the corresponding password. After confirming with OK, the user authentication by the Radius server of the HRZ takes place, then access to the GIS-Labor computer as well as the central storage of the HRZ is possible. By using the computer you automatically accept the terms of use (see above) of the GIS-Lab.
Where can I store my data?
You log on to the computers with a local user profile. Even if the data stored - e.g. under "Documents" - is retained at the next login, you should definitely store the data externally, since the data stored on the computers is only retained until the next imaging of the computers (which may also be necessary during the current semester if a computer is no longer functioning reliably).
The simplest way to store your own data is offered by the University Computing Center (HRZ) of the University of Bonn with the University Cloud Sciebo or the Research Data Infrastructure (FDI).
If you want to provide data for a course or exchange them with other users, this is possible via the drive V: (fuer_alle), which is also included via script and located on the GIS-Labor server. Please note that this drive is accessible for every user and will be deleted after the end of the semester!
Electric power supply
Laptops or smartphones brought along must not be plugged into the sockets under the tables, as this has often led to power failures of entire rows of computers in the past!
For this reason, power strips have been installed on the rows of tables, which can be used for charging.
